Health Benefits of Green Building Products

There are many benefits to using green building products. Cork and bamboo are sustainable, easily harvested and are an excellent option for flooring. Recycled glass can be mixed with concrete and used to make countertops. And products that don’t have to be replaced frequently put less of a burden on natural resources and landfills.
But one of the biggest advantages to using green products is the affect they have on your health. Recent studies reveal that buildings with good overall environmental quality can reduce allergies, asthma and even enhance your performance at work.
Josh Daniels, owner of Green Sacramento, is used to seeing people come in who have sensitivities to certain materials.
“I’d say about a quarter of our customers specifically come to our store because they’re looking for something that won’t trigger their allergies or irritate their asthma, for example.”
Fortunately, Green Sacramento has a trio of healthy products to chose from, each offering unique benefits.
Looking to paint a bedroom or finish a hardwood floor? You can choose from a large selection of zero or low VOC paints, stains and sealants. VOC’s are volatile organic compounds and are often harmful to humans, as well as smog producing.
Need a flooring material that’s easy to clean, soft under foot and stylish? Marmoleum is all-natural linoleum flooring made from linseed oil, wood flour, rosin, limestone, and with a jute backing. And due to its smooth surface it helps reduce dust, which means less dust mites. The presence of these mites is one of the major causes of allergy, asthma, and other respiratory disorders.
Finally, if you’re truly looking for a great night of sleep look no further than our mattresses and bedding. We have mattresses made of organic cotton, pure grow wool, (with a combination of organic cotton) and natural inner-spring mattresses. And none of the mattresses are sprayed with nasty fire retardants. They are naturally flame resistant due to the pure grow wool woven into the batting, or stuffing, of the bed.
“The beds are high quality, very durable and are made with healthy materials that not only support better sleep, but allow for better peace of mind,” Daniels noted. “And we’re seeing a lot of interest in our paints and marmoleum right now. People are sprucing up their home and getting ready for the holidays. A new floor and a freshly painted room go a long way in making your house look great.”
